These would include Truth, Temptation, Difference, Fear, and more. The most central personified characters are Love, Reason, and the Soul. There is little action other than their dialogue, except for the death of Reason. Second, in its addition to personification allegory, the Mirror uses other allegorical techniques that fall on the continuum between allegory and metaphor (6). Porete develops and extends metaphors (nobility, courtly love) to such an extent that they act as allegories within the personification allegory. By assigning gender to her characters, Marguerite places her characters in positions of autho rity, or rather, creates authority for them within the world of the text. Women are presented as courtly ladies, passively accepting the ardent advances of their aristocratic suitor (Kocher 174). Because the character of Soul undergoes significant changes throughout the book, she, herself, becomes like a courtly lover, taking the center stage in the drama of her journey towards her beloved, God. Even though he is the central to the process, in much of the text, he is more like a destination than a character. Soul is a main character, whose transformations are designed to engage the audiences sympathy and invite listeners to identify with her (Kocher 14-15). By creating this central female character as an example setter, Marguerite is able to maintain her authority, and teach her readers to achieve the annihilation of the soul. By focusing on love relationships among members of the noble characters in a metaphorically aristocratic social system that revolves around its monarch, God (Kocher 151), it represents heaven as a court. Soul and God carry on a relationship that resembles courtly love between a knight and a dame. Even if it is not necessary to find Marguerites voice within the text, her doctrine and theology is relatively radical for her time period. She used her text to her full advantage: using it as a way of freedom to the ultimate annihilation of her desires. Somewhat paradoxically, she was released from her earthly desires because of her text, as she was sentenced to death for heresy. The Mirror itself is the mirror, which reflects the soul reflecting the love of God. The mirror becomes an image of wholeness and seamless simplicity rather than fragmentation and specialization, reflecting the mystics experience of integration and transparency. The Soul, the text, the Love, and the Lord, are all mirrors into the soul for Marguerite. McGinn believes that the mirror, an apparently apt symbol of womans narcissism, in Marguerites Mirror bec omes emblematic of her willingness to lose herself in a most radical otherness (76). COMPARE AND CONTRAST â€Å"DISABLED† BY WILFRED OWEN AND â€Å"OUT, OUT-†BY ROBERT FROST. IN WHAT WAYS DO THEY EXPLORE THE THEME OF PAIN AND SUFFERING? These two poems are very different in terms of syntax, structure and actions, but the tone is the same in each. Both poems make us pity the young boys who were forced to grow up before their time, not understanding the possible consequences of their actions. They are connected in this way despite being thrown out of life differently (and because of different reasons) but because both were moved by the desire to be seen as better or older in the eyes of others. This is ironic as they are simply forgotten by the people they wanted to impress, be they the girls with the â€Å"slim waists† or the anonymous†¦show more content†¦Furthermore this continuity highlights the actual point of they boy’s accident, together with his death, as caesuras and harsher sounds are being used in the words to make it all more dramatic. â€Å"Disabled† also uses language to make the poem more moving or to get a point across, such as how neither the soldier’s nor the boyà ¢â‚¬â„¢s names or details are given so that we understand that these kinds of disasters can happen to anyone (that they are not the exceptions). These uses of diction let us understand the tragedies of both poems’ characters better. The structure helps show us how â€Å"Disabled† is allowing the soldier to dwell on the problems and feel regret, while the boy never has the chance. This is what I meant when I mentioned the different kinds of pain present in the poems - the soldier actually feels the world’s indifference that makes everything so much worse to him, while the same is happening to the boy but he never actually has to feel the dispassion and disinterest towards his death. That is what makes the poems so cruel, not the physical injuries themselves and Owen uses that by avoiding any graphic description of the wound, but focusing on everything he has lost in terms of human contact. MDMA is made in a laboratory by altering the existing synthetic drug MDA. Ecstasy is a powder often taken in the form of a pill or capsule, it may also be snorted. Most MDMA is produced in Europe, mainly Belgium and the Netherlands. The drug is also produced on a smaller scale in the US, Canada and Mexico. This paper will attempt to formulate a sufficient theory of meaning with regards to the use of ‘+.’ In doing so, I will argue that an intensional framework must be taken into account as opposed to a purely extensional framework. From a general perspective, the issue revolves around the relation between two fundamental concepts, truth and meaning. Truth, from a logical point of view, has traditionally been thought of as extensional. So t he truth of a given expression is associated with it’s meaning in terms of logical structure, reference, and truth-value. This move of neglecting meaning in relation to that of the sense of a given expression is what this paper shall argue against by using ‘+’ as its test case throughout the paper. For herein, to say that 36 + 16 = 54 could mean two things: ‘36 plus 16,’ and ‘36 quus 16,’ with both referring to 54. It is in this regard that a theory of intensions must be taken into account. For, if a person is presented with an equation involving ‘+’, how can one know as to whether that person meant ‘+’ as plus or ‘+’ as quus? What makes the interlocutor assume what is being referred to by the use of ‘+’? Herein is where the problem of rule following comes into light, for if what we are after is semantics, then it seems paradoxical that we refer to general rules from which a class parti cipates in. Rule following applies in the level of syntax, for verifying what the individual knows privately is not required in such cases. Indeed, the problem with ‘+’, as explicated by Kripke is that ‘+’ is understood to represent a semantic rule rather than a syntactical rule, and a semantic rule following leads to several problems with regards to the meaning and truth of ‘+’ statements. Thus, Kripke argues that â€Å"it is possible to construct an unlimited range of related but non-equivalent semantic rules, incorporating the potential truth conditions C1, C2, †¦ Cn respectively, such that there are simply no facts at all about the speaker’s use of ‘+’ that determines which, if any, of these possible rules the speaker has actually adopted† (Wilson, 2006, p.155). Therefore, this points towards the problem of indeterminacy, since according to Kripke, discovering the truth conditions of the speaker’s use of + is not possible, since there is no specific semantic rule that underlies one’s use of ‘+’, regardless of its truth function. It can be difficult to play the part of someone you are not, for the reason that it can rebound on you. It is better to persist with who you are, and not reveal all of yourself in the beginning, like a good story. To present who we are, we should start at the foundation, begin with presenting an opening act. This act should be near to true life, the person you would like to be known as. Currently a person of importance gives the impression that they know what they are doing, example your doctor. If they were a person who, on first meeting gave the impression that they were unsure, confused and unconfident, would you go back to them? No, perhaps not. Even when they are having a bad day your doctor will always appear to be in control, so that we feel more at ease. When we first meet new people we try to acquire information about them, it is then how the person delivers this information, that we base our assumptions. People give information verbally and non-verbally by expressions, movements, gestures and other presumably unintentional communications, like a slight smile. Our brain takes all this information into consideration then makes a personal judgment based on the material it collects. There is so much information for us to collect and make our decision on, that we sometimes need a second meeting to be able to make a correct judgement on a particular person we have meet. Lorenzo's Hometown Lorenzo Lujan grew up in Morenci, Arizona. His father worked in the Morenci Mine, and his brothers, brothers in law, uncles and his wife's family all worked in the mine. He said, "[Morenci] was like a big family--and I don't just mean literal family members, the whole town was a family. Morenci was the type of town where you didn't have to lock your doors at night; everybody knew everybody else." But he doesn't relish the idea of returning to his hometown. "Phelps Dodge broke up that whole community. Ninety percent of the people left," he said. "So, when I go to Morenci now, it isn’t the same town I grew up in." Now, in addition to teaching Machine Technologies courses at Pima Community College, he is the Instrument Shop Supervisor in the Chemical Engineering lab at the University of Arizona. My roommate works in the shop he supervises and comes home with some of the most comic stories I've heard in a while. Between eating their own weight in burros and competing with each other in the latest computer games, they manufacture precise custom equipment that is used in experiments involving everything from lasers to rat dissection. I became interested in this fascinating coexistence of Mexican food, video games and drill presses when I learned of Lorenzo's connection to Morenci. What could have possibly happened to the small mining community of Morenci to cause a mass exodus? The answer: STRIKE. But, not just any strike could break up this community. The Morenci Mine Strike of 1983 lasted for over 30 months and left many of Morenci's residents unemployed. The '83 strike pitted half the community against the other, and brought the in outside world with an alarming show of force. In 1983, Phelps Dodge, one of the world's largest mining corporations, was in serious trouble. In 1982, they lost $74million mostly due to bad investments and management personnel issues, but the price of copper was hovering just below the break-even point as well. They had to make cuts to help recoup their financial losses, so in April of 1982, they laid off their entire Arizona and Texas work forces totaling over 3,400 hourly employees. In May of 1983 when the miners' contract negotiations began, the unions wanted to keep the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) and the medical benefits already in their contracts.
